Sewage on your basement floor is one of the few true drain emergencies. What you do in the first half hour determines whether this is a bad afternoon or a five-figure insurance claim. Here's the checklist.

1. Stop using water — all of it

Every flush, every load of laundry, every shower upstairs is going straight to the lowest opening in the house: your basement. Shut it all down and tell everyone in the house.

2. Keep people and pets away

Raw sewage carries bacteria and viruses. No bare feet, no letting the dog investigate. If it's more than a small puddle, don't wade in — especially if water is near any electrical outlets or appliances. When in doubt, shut off power to the affected area at the breaker (only if you can reach the panel without stepping in water).

3. Don't reach for chemical drain cleaner

It won't fix a main-line backup — the blockage is bigger and deeper than any bottle can reach — and now there's caustic chemical mixed into the standing sewage the technician has to work in. Skip it.

4. Figure out if it's your line or the city's

Quick test: if only your house is affected, it's almost certainly your lateral (the line from your house to the street — your responsibility). If neighbors have backups too, call Colorado Springs Utilities as well. Either way, the next call is the same.

5. Call a 24/7 drain company — not a general handyman

A main-line backup needs professional equipment: a machine to clear the blockage and a camera to find out what caused it. Roots, a collapsed section, or a belly in the line all look identical from your basement floor. The camera tells you whether this was a one-time clog or the first symptom of a failing pipe — and that difference matters enormously for what you spend next.

Clearing the blockage gets your house working again. The camera inspection is what keeps this from happening next month. If the line is sound, great — you'll know. If it isn't, you can plan a repair on your schedule instead of during the next 2 a.m. emergency.
