Why Security-Widefield Lines Behave the Way They Do

Security and Widefield grew up around Fort Carson and Peterson in the postwar decades. The bulk of the housing dates from the 1950s through the 1970s, and that single fact explains most of the drain calls we run out here. Those homes were plumbed with cast iron inside and cast iron or vitrified clay out to the main. Both materials work fine for fifty years and then start telling on themselves.

Cast iron corrodes from the inside out. The bore roughens, then scales, then catches every bit of hair and grease that passes. Clay is smooth but comes in short sections with joints, and joints move. 1. Root Intrusion

The street trees planted with these subdivisions are now sixty years old with root systems to match. A slightly leaking clay joint is the wettest thing in the yard during a dry Colorado summer, and roots find it. Once inside, they build a mat that catches everything. 2. Scale in Cast Iron

Hard local water plus decades of use leaves mineral and rust buildup that narrows a four-inch pipe to something much smaller. Jetting scours it back toward original diameter; a cable just rides over the top of it.

Some of the older runs out here are shallower than current code allows, and stretches that cross unheated crawl spaces or run under slabs are vulnerable in a hard freeze. A drain that slows suddenly in January is a different diagnosis than one that has slowed gradually all year.

Properties in the Fountain Creek floodplain deal with a high seasonal water table. Where joints are open, groundwater carries in sand that settles into low spots and sags. Camera work is the only way to tell grit accumulation from a structural belly.
