Why Does My Toilet Keep Clogging?

One clog is an accident. A toilet that needs the plunger every week is telling you something about the toilet itself, what's going into it, or the line it drains into.

Guides / Drain Cleaning

Four causes behind repeat toilet clogs

1. What's being flushed

Wipes, paper towels, feminine products, dental floss, and cotton swabs don't dissolve. Even thick, quilted toilet paper used in large amounts can overwhelm a weak flush. A trash can beside the toilet solves more clogs than any tool.

2. Weak flushing

Early low-flow toilets, mineral-clogged rim jets from Colorado's hard water, or a tank that doesn't fill fully all reduce flushing force. If water swirls weakly or the bowl drains slowly before refilling, the toilet itself may be the problem.

3. Something stuck in the trapway

A small object caught in the toilet's internal bend lets water pass but catches paper every time. Sudden, frequent clogs in a toilet that used to work fine often point here.

4. A main line restriction

Toilets move the most solid waste, so they show main line trouble first. Watch for gurgling in the tub when you flush, water rising in the shower, or slow drains elsewhere. Those are signs of a clogged main line, often from roots or buildup.

What to try, and when to stop

How we fix it for good

We check whether the clog is in the toilet or past it. If it's in the line, we clear it and, for repeat problems, run a camera inspection to see roots, a sag, or buildup. Many recurring toilet clogs end with main sewer line cleaning. More in why drains keep clogging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are flushable wipes really the problem?

Very often. So-called flushable wipes don't break down like toilet paper. They snag in the toilet's trapway or further down the line and catch everything that follows.

Why does my low-flow toilet clog so much?

Older low-flow models from the 1990s often lacked the flushing power to carry waste far enough. Waste settles in the horizontal line and builds up. Newer high-efficiency toilets perform much better.

Could the main sewer line be causing toilet clogs?

Yes, if the toilet clogs and other drains are slow, or if water rises in the tub when you flush. The toilet is often the first fixture to show a main line restriction.

Something hard went down the toilet. What now?

Stop flushing. Toys, toothbrushes, and phones lodge in the trapway; plunging can push them deeper into the line. The toilet may need to be pulled to retrieve it.
