Guides / Hydro Jetting

What standard drain cleaning does

Cable machines — drum machines, sectional machines, handheld augers — push a rotating steel cable down the pipe with a head on the end. The head bores through the blockage, cuts roots, or hooks debris so it can be pulled back out. It's fast, it's effective on solid obstructions, and it's the right first move on most emergency calls, because the priority is getting wastewater out of the house.

Its limit is the pipe wall. A cable travels through the middle of the line. Grease, soap film, and mineral scale coating the sides mostly stay where they are.

What hydro jetting does

A jetter pushes water through a nozzle at very high pressure. Rear-facing jets pull the hose upstream while blasting the pipe wall in every direction, so the buildup is cut loose and flushed out of the system. When we're done, the pipe is close to its original inside diameter — which is why a jetted line stays clear far longer. Full detail in what is hydro jetting.

Side by side

How we choose on your line

We ask two questions: has this happened before, and what does the pipe look like inside? A first stoppage in a sound line gets standard drain cleaning. A line with a history — or a kitchen line in a restaurant or car wash — gets a camera inspection and then hydro jetting if the pipe can take it. If the footage shows a belly, an offset, or a break, we say so instead of selling a cleaning that can't hold.

Common cases in Colorado Springs

Older cast iron and clay laterals in Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, and Security-Widefield tend to combine roots with scale, which usually means cable first, then jet. Newer PVC runs on larger lots in Monument and Castle Rock are more often grease and low-spot problems, where jetting alone is the answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between drain cleaning and hydro jetting?

Standard drain cleaning uses a rotating steel cable to bore through or cut apart a blockage. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water and a specialized nozzle to scour the full inside diameter of the pipe, removing grease, soap, scale, and root hairs rather than just opening a channel.

Which one do I need?

A single hard blockage in an otherwise clean line is a cabling job. A line that clogs repeatedly, drains slowly overall, or carries kitchen grease is a jetting job. A camera inspection settles it in a few minutes.

Is hydro jetting more expensive?

Per visit, yes. Over two years it's usually cheaper, because it removes the cause instead of the symptom and eliminates repeat calls.

Can hydro jetting damage old pipes?

It can, on pipe that is already deteriorated — badly corroded cast iron or Orangeburg. That's why we camera older lines first and adjust pressure or recommend a different approach when jetting isn't safe.

Does cabling ever work better than jetting?

Yes. For a solid obstruction like a heavy root mass or a foreign object, a cutting head on a cable is often the faster, more effective first move. We frequently cable to restore flow, then jet to clean the pipe properly.
