A motorized reel spins a flexible steel cable down the drain. A cutter head on the end chews through whatever it hits — roots, paper, grease, a toy. The cable is excellent at boring and at retrieving. It is not a cleaning tool: the debris it cuts loose either washes downstream or stays where it was, and the ring of grease and scale coating the pipe wall is untouched.
A high-pressure pump sends water down a hose to a nozzle that fires most of its water backward. The reverse thrust pulls the hose up the line while the jets strip the pipe wall and flush everything downstream. When it's finished, the camera shows bare pipe. Full detail in what is hydro jetting.
Snaking: a channel through the obstruction, often 1–2 inches of usable opening in a 4-inch pipe. Jetting: full pipe diameter restored. On a line narrowed by grease or hard-water scale, that difference in capacity is enormous.

Both tools can hurt a bad pipe. A spinning cutter can snag and crack brittle clay or punch through channeled cast iron; jetting at the wrong pressure can finish off deteriorated Orangeburg or open a hairline crack. Two local conditions push most of our work toward jetting. First, a large share of homes here predate the 1980s and run clay or cast iron laterals — clay has joints every few feet that roots find, and cast iron scales heavily. Second, Front Range water is hard, so mineral deposits build inside pipes faster than in soft-water regions. Cabling a scaled cast-iron line is a temporary measure by definition; the scale is the pipe's new inside diameter until something scrubs it off.
Root intrusion is usually a two-step job: cable with a root cutter to remove the mass, then jet to clean the feeder hairs out of the joint and the wall. Skipping the second step is why roots seem to come back in a single season. More in main sewer line cleaning.

Yes. For a single fixture clog, a foreign object, or an emergency backup where the priority is getting the home usable in the next 30 minutes, a cable is faster and cheaper. It's also the safer tool on a pipe the camera shows is fragile.
Because the cable bored a channel through the blockage but left the buildup on the pipe wall. Flow returns, then the opening closes back up. If a line has been snaked twice in two years, the buildup — not the clog — is the actual problem.
