The kitchen sink is the most clogged drain in almost every house we visit. The good news: the cause is predictable, and so is the fix.

Food particles and soap stick to that coating. Colorado Springs' hard water adds mineral scale, which gives the grease a rough surface to grip. After a few years, a 1½-inch kitchen line can be narrowed to a pencil-sized opening.
Skip the chemical drain openers. They rarely reach a grease clog in the wall, they damage older metal pipes, and they make the job hazardous for whoever cleans the line next.
If the trap is clean and the sink still backs up, the blockage is in the branch line inside the wall or under the floor. A cable will reopen it, but on a grease-coated line it often returns within months. For repeat kitchen clogs, hydro jetting scours the pipe back to its full diameter. Compare the two in drain cleaning vs hydro jetting.

The kitchen has its own branch line, and it carries grease, food solids, and soap that bathroom lines never see. A clog limited to the kitchen is almost always in that branch, not the main sewer.
Hot tap water is fine. Boiling water can soften PVC joints and crack porcelain sinks, and it only moves grease a few feet before it cools and re-hardens.
It can. A disposal grinds food smaller but doesn't make it disappear. Peels, rice, pasta, and coffee grounds still settle in the trap arm and branch line, especially with low water flow.
If a plunger or cleaning the trap doesn't fix it, if both sides of a double sink back up, or if the dishwasher drains into the sink. Those point to a clog past the trap.
