It's a short capped pipe most homeowners never notice — until the sewer backs up. Knowing where yours is can save time, mess, and money.

It lets a technician feed a cable, jetter hose, or camera straight into the line without going through a toilet or the roof. It's the starting point for nearly every main sewer line cleaning.
Look for a round cap, often black or white plastic or a brass plug, marked "CO" in some cases.
If sewage is coming up a floor drain, a technician with cleanout access can usually relieve the line in minutes. Without it, we may need to pull a toilet first. Checking the cleanout for water also tells you whether the blockage is between the house and the street. See basement floor drain backups and whole-house backups.
If you've had roots, recurring clogs, or plan regular hydro jetting, an exterior cleanout pays for itself quickly. It also makes a camera inspection faster and more complete. Read what sewer line cleaning costs.

Most homes built in the last few decades do. Many older Colorado Springs homes either have one inside the basement, one buried in the yard, or none at all.
We can usually access the line by pulling a toilet or going through a roof vent, which takes longer. Adding an exterior cleanout is a worthwhile upgrade if you've had main line problems.
You can loosen the cap carefully to check for standing water during a backup. Stand to the side — if the line is full, sewage can push the cap off. Don't put tools down it.
